How to Apply for Food Stamps (SNAP) Online

Quick Answer

You apply for food stamps (SNAP) through your state, not the federal government. Most states let you apply online — for example YourTexasBenefits.com, MyACCESS in Florida or BenefitsCal in California. Expect an interview and a decision within 30 days, or 7 days if your need is urgent.

What Are Food Stamps in the USA?

"Food stamps" is the old name for SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. USDA funds it and each state runs it. If you qualify, money for groceries is loaded onto an EBT card every month (USA.gov).

Apply Online, Login and Phone Numbers by State

How to Apply for Food Stamps, Step by Step

  1. Apply online on your state's site (above), or in person, by mail or by fax — options vary by state (USA.gov).
  2. Send documents: proof of identity, income, housing and utility costs, and medical costs if someone is 60+ or disabled.
  3. Do the interview, usually by phone.
  4. Get a decision within 30 days of applying (7 CFR 273.2).

Emergency Food Stamps (Expedited SNAP)

There is no separate emergency application — you apply the normal way, and the state must decide within 7 days if your household:

  • has gross monthly income under $150 and $100 or less in cash or bank accounts; or
  • has income plus cash that is less than your rent or mortgage plus utilities; or
  • is a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household with $100 or less (7 CFR 273.2).

Who Gets Food Stamps in the US?

You must meet your state's rules, which look at income and money in the bank (USA.gov). Under federal rules most households need gross income at or below 130% of the poverty level and net income at or below 100%; many states allow more. Adults 18–64 without a child under 14 also face work rules, and some non-citizens are not eligible.

SNAP Income Limits and Maximum Benefits (Oct 2026 – Sep 2027)

USDA updates these figures every October 1. The table shows the federal limits for 48 states and DC that apply from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027: gross income at or below 130% of the poverty level, net income (after deductions) at or below 100%, and the maximum monthly benefit.

Many states use a higher gross limit for most households — up to 200% of the poverty level in Florida and California, 165% in Texas. See our state guides for details.

The maximum benefit goes only to households with no countable net income. Most households get less, because SNAP expects about 30% of net income to be spent on food.

How Much Are Food Stamps?

The table above shows the maximum monthly benefit. SNAP expects a household to spend about 30% of its net income on food, so most households get the maximum minus 30% of net income. For national spending and the average benefit per person, USDA publishes SNAP participation and cost data.

After You Apply

  • First payment: your first month is prorated from the day you applied; after that benefits arrive on your state's regular day — see our SNAP payment schedules by state.
  • Check your balance: your last store receipt, your state's app or site, or the EBT number above.
  • Shop online: many states allow SNAP at approved online stores — see how to use EBT on Instacart.
